Sewelo Maths and Chess Community Youth Development Academy, known as SEMCCYA, is a community-based non-profit organisation located in Makhanda, Eastern Cape. We provide children and young people with opportunities to improve their mathematics skills, learn and compete in chess, and participate in structured developmental activities. Our work recognises that education is about more than academic performance. Through mathematics, chess and community participation, young people can develop concentration, discipline, confidence, problem-solving abilities and positive relationships with others. SEMCCYA works with learners, families, schools and community partners to make these opportunities accessible to more young people.
To use mathematics, chess and youth development activities to equip children and young people with knowledge, confidence, discipline and practical problem-solving skills.
A supportive community where every young person has access to opportunities that help them learn, think critically and work towards their potential.
We create opportunities that help young people develop knowledge and skills they can use at school and in everyday life.
We believe children and young people from different backgrounds should have fair access to learning and developmental opportunities.
We encourage commitment, responsibility, good sportsmanship and respect for others throughout our programmes.
We value the involvement of families, schools, volunteers, partners and organisations that share our commitment to young people.
Your support can help SEMCCYA provide mathematics education, chess coaching, tournaments and youth development opportunities to more children and young people in Makhanda.
